VOLUNTEER WORK PROJECTS

cropped hauling fence post

The AES has two upcoming work projects scheduled in the White Mountains near Big Lake.  Please consider coming up and helping improve wildlife habitat.

May 30-June 1  Burro Creek Annual fence removal.  Camp in the woods with the AES or at the Big Lake campground.  More info.....

June 28-29  AES Adopt-a-ranch 26 Bar project.  Same camp and setup with the work being done on a spring and water tank.  More info....

If you are interested in going to any of the work projects and would like to carpool please let Tom Schorr know.  Because of the gas prices we are going to try and offer carpooling to save.

If you are interested in going but don't have a place to stay please let Tom know.  There are some of us that have room in our trailers and don't mind letting others stay there.

If you have a question about the project please ask Tom.

We know that gas, time and comfort are some of the reasons for people to not go to the work projects and if we can help alleviate some of the reasons we are willing to do that.  We need as many volunteers as possible and with the current economic situation it is going to be hard for some to get involved.  If you are going and have room to give rides and share your tent or trailer please let Tom know and he will try to coordinate.

Thanks    Contact Tom Schorr

ARIZONA
GAINS MORE WILDLIFE HABITAT

blanca cienaga

On April 21, 2008 the USFS in Springerville AZ., ranchers Dan Heap and Charles Hancock, and the Arizona Elk Society signed a MOU agreeing to set aside another 8,000+ acres of habitat for Elk and other wildlife.   The new wildlife habitat includes many riparian areas as well as important headwaters for creeks and rivers leading to  Apache Trout restoration areas.  The wildlife will benefit by not having to compete with cattle.  The public will benefit by having cattle and fences removed from important recreation areas surrounding Big Lake.
The AES, USFS and area ranchers have set aside over 34,000 acres of forest habitat in the last couple of years.  See the AES website for updates and pictures. (coming soon)

Special thanks to the AES Arizona Habitat Partners, the USFS, AZGFD and the AES Projects committee for there donations and committment to Elk Habitat.
